چکیده

Comparisons with aircraft in situ measurements are critically needed to quantify the uncertainties in Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) surface-and satellite-band retrievals of cloud properties. During the fall of 1996, measurements were made from a ground-based remote sensing site in central Pennsylvania in conjunction with University of Wyoming King Air aircraft flights over the area. The goal of this experiment was to validate groundand satellite-based retrievals of cloud droplet effective radius, number concentration, and cloud liquid water content (LWC) using in situ aircraft measurements. This paper reports the results of one case study of an extended continental stratus cloud that was intensively sampled and observed by the aircraft and ground-based remote sensors and aircraft in situ instruments during the experiment on October 24, 1996. The comparison of these results provides more data for assessing the uncertainties in the remotely sensed parameters over the ARM sites.

P2B.10 Comparison and validation of WRF-ARW cloud microphysics schemes during C3VP/CLEX-10 field experiment

Better understanding of the vertical structures of clouds in the atmosphere is essential for more accurate radar, lidar, satellite retrievals, climate/weather numerical modeling, and even aviation safety issues regarding icing conditions (Fleishauer et al., 2002). However, an accurate estimate of liquid and ice phase hydrometeors in the clouds is still very challenging, and our limited knowledg...

Analysis of temporal and spatial correlation between precipitable water vapor retrievals from AIRS satellite sensor and 29 synoptic station measurements in Iran

Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is one of the most important quantities in meteorology and climate studies. PWV in Earth's atmosphere can be measured by Sun-photometer, the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and radiosonde from surface, atmosphere and space-based systems, respectively. In this paper, we use PWV measured by Sun-photometer located in Institute for Advanced Studies in Basic Scien...

Comparison of Stratus Cloud Optical Depths Retrieved from Surface and GOES Measurements over the ARM SGP Central Facility

The climatic importance of the microphysical and radiative properties of clouds, particularly cloud droplet effective radii (re), optical depths (τ), and albedos are widely recognized. For reliable application of satellite datasets in cloud process and single column models, it is important to have a reasonable estimate of the errors in the derived cloud properties. When properly used, ground-ba...
